Bandai’s “NetTansor™” is a compact but powerful mobile robot designed for families and hobbyists. It comes as part of a complete kit that features an onboard camera, a wireless network connection, Evolution Robotics’ intelligent vision system and easy-to-use software for the PC. Users can access NetTansor remotely from the Internet, drive it around their home to check on pets while away on vacation, or even create programs for NetTansor to run entirely on its own, such as having NetTansor patrol their house and automatically send pictures to their mobile phone based on what it sees.

Computer Scientists Unravel ‘Language of Surgery’ Print E-mail
Borrowing ideas from speech recognition research, Johns Hopkins computer scientists are building mathemrobotatical models to represent the safest and most effective ways to perform surgery, including tasks such as suturing, dissecting and joining tissue.

The team’s long-term goal is to develop an objective way of evaluating a surgeon’s work and to help doctors improve their operating room skills. Ultimately, the research also could enable robotic surgical tools to perform with greater precision. The project, supported by a three-year National Science Foundation grant, has yielded promising early results in modeling suturing work. The researchers performed the suturing with the help of a robotic surgical device, which recorded the movements and made them available for computer analysis.

International Robot Superstars to Converge on Atlanta for World’s Largest Robotics Research Competition

The Georgia Institute of Technology has been selected to host RoboCup 2007, the world’s most renowned research competition among custom-built robots and their designers. RoboCup 2007 Atlanta, scheduled for July 1-10, 2007, marks the first time that the event, featuring simulated soccer and search-and-rescue competitions, will be hosted entirely on a college campus and only the second time in the United States. Past host cities for the international tournament include Paris (1998), Seattle (2001), Lisbon (2004), Osaka, Japan (2005) and Bremen, Germany (2006).
